13-Jan-2022Highspot, a sales enablement platform that increases the performance of sales teams, raised $248M in Series F funding. Highspot’s post-money valuation is now $3.5Bn, which has quadrupled in the past two years. The company’s total funding is now $648M. New investors B Capital Group & D1 Capital Partners led the round with participation from existing investors: ICONIQ Growth, Madrona Venture Group, Salesforce Ventures, Sapphire, & Tiger Global Management.

One metric in this space to watch now for COVID-19 impact is churn in SaaS; especially when you consider how many new customers you have to onboard for every 1% of your customers that don’t renew: Maybe double or triple the number that left needs to be onboarded to make up for lost revenue (depending on the account size)?

“I recall the consolidation and reduction of SaaS at different points in time, but recall one of our best years was the downturn of 2007/08 where companies moved from on premise to SaaS simply because their IT simply couldn’t build new systems and they felt SaaS was a better, fast and cheaper option. Also, as in today, when buyers are forced to tighten budgets which is happening overnight now they will need sales advisors to advance their purchases. B2B enablement services are sticky once a company gets beyond it being a marketing content warehouse and they build in enablement use cases like onboarding and product launch support. The content and taxonomy that exists in an intelligent center remains key and can’t be replaced with simple file storage including a Sharepoint deployment. […]”

Obviously, there are many ways to define the boundaries of this market.

Here’s my definition of Sales Enablement.

The Gartner Report: Market Guide for Digital Content Management for Sales published 17-Nov-2017 sees…

…“Digital content management for sales (DCMS)” […] vendors […] “generate $423.5 million in revenue, up by approximately 16% from the previous year.”

In 2017 (22-June-2017), Sales Engagement Platforms (SEP) were a $780M/year market, and “expected to be worth $5B by 2021” (Aragon Research).

Obviously, the Sales Engagement Platform market is different from the Sales Enablement Technology [or Sales Enablement Platform] market.

However, it is interesting to take Aragon’s numbers to see what growth rate they are assuming.

If they think that market can reach $5B by 2021 (which I question; unless they count some of Salesforce’s revenue) and if they assume a linear growth rate, then they are assuming a market growth rate of 59.12% a year.

The first ones are not in order of revenue.

My total count is 186 vendors.

The revenue shown in the graph above (I took out Enhatch) is a lot more than the $400M from Travis, T. (6-Sep-2017): Sales Enablement Platforms Expand the SalesTech Stack.

I added some to account for the elephants in the software market and some for the very long ‘long tail’ of small vendors. Hence, you get to more than the $780M Aragon Research has for the so-called Sales Engagement Platform market. I know many companies consider their Microsoft SharePoint document repository as their Sales Enablement portal:

I’m always looking for new ways to show the entire market size and the percentage breakdown of all the market players.

I see the market at $8bn USD in annual revenue in 2022, but only if counting some of the revenue of the really large players in software that bought out smaller Sales Enablement players or those big players who offer free/freemium tools that could be used for Sales Enablement.

I started to research the market players in 2007 and started to blog here on February 25, 2009.

Despite all this, I’m getting something very similar to the following email every 2 months – like clockwork…

“I came across your blog while researching the Sales Enablement space for a company with a sales enablement tool in beta. Would you be open to a quick chat and explore the opportunity of working together for the short term? I’m sure we could use your expertise to understand the sales enablement market and user needs better. Thanks.”

…and I always respond with something like this:

“An integration with salesforce.com is what you will see at the top of the list. If you target startups, then a Slack integration would be a quick win. There are so many vendors & solutions out there from lightweight to enterprise grade, from freemium to million dollar deployments, etc…

I have seen more than 18 vendors enter this market and shut down already [without being purchased]. Many more had to sell or partner to survive. It is a very crowded market, because so many companies & sales experts used to have no tool for their sales people (or too many), then built one for their own use, and are trying to sell it to external customers now.

At this point, I would really warn anyone who wants to enter this market: You can burn a lot of money & never get profitable: The moment you have a customer, they will ask for so many changes & features that you will keep building something that either already exists (but they don’t want to combine many tools & ask you to build one that can do everything) or you will build something that only works for them and no other customer.

There have been sales enablement solutions that became too sophisticated and you needed to train their users. There have been sales enablement solutions that were really lightweight small widgets shown in PowerPoint to add slides into auto-generated presentations, but still did not successfully compete in this market place.

It is a tricky one with more and more 800-pound gorillas!”
